platform engineering provides reusable services for the apps. the fact the apps are now built with microservices rather than monolith is a parallel process, and can work well with platform engineering.

I do see cyclic nature of platforms, as I mentioned with the PaaS perspective, where different tradeoff is done between simplicity and flexibility.
